Strong cheekbones are a universally appreciated trait that adds definition and youth to the face. Most iconic celebrities, be they male or female, have high cheekbones that give their face more volume. High cheekbones are sought after by everyone, especially as they get older. Even those born with strong cheekbones often lose structure or volume as they age.

As a result of aging and the loss of defined cheekbones, skin sags and jowls are created. To avoid this, some patients choose temporary filler injections. However, the most permanent way to combat this issue is through the addition of cheek implants. Implants enhance the structure of the cheeks to give patients a more youthful look. Patients often regain confidence and self-esteem after these procedures.

Before the Cheek Augmentation Procedure

Any adult with the desire to enhance their cheeks can choose to come in for a cheek augmentation. General good health and realistic expectations are a must for any plastic surgery procedure. The doctor has the responsibility of understanding the patient’s medical history and making sure that they are fit for surgery.

During the consultation, the doctor will closely examine the patient’s facial features and tell them what they can expect. The doctor will also decide the shape and size of the implant needed. Malar and combined submalar are the two most popular shapes and sizes for cheek implants. The latter is larger and provides more support to the cheekbones. Once the decision is made, the patient is given instructions for preparation that are to be strictly followed.

The Procedure

During the surgery, the patient is sedated using general anesthesia. The doctor then makes incisions intra-orally, in the upper gum line. These incisions cut down to the bone in order to create pockets for the implants. Once the incisions are made, the doctor will observe the soft tissue and anatomy of the area to decide if the selected size of implants will work. In some cases, smaller or larger implants are more suited for getting the desired results. After the decision is made, the surgeon puts in the required implants and closes the incisions. The procedure lasts between one to two hours.

Recovery and Results

Cheek augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis so that the patient can go home on the same day. Patients will experience minor bruising and swelling after the procedure, but these symptoms will fade over the recovery period. Typically, most patients can get back to work within two weeks. Cold compresses can be used to deal with swelling and bruising, and pain medications are prescribed as needed. Additionally, the doctor will provide detailed post-operative care instructions that must be strictly followed.

The results of cheek augmentation can be seen almost immediately after the surgery. Final results will be seen once the swelling and bruising has vanished. The procedure is a permanent one and allows patients to have great cheek structure for the rest of their lives.
