As separate procedures, breast lifts and breast augmentation with implants have been popular for a long time. Now, we have the combination procedure known as augmentation mastopexy, or a breast lift with implants.

During this procedure, the breast lift is performed along with the placement of breast implants for volume. Combining both as one surgery avoids the need for two surgical sessions and two recovery times. The results obtained are remarkable, and the procedure is gaining in popularity.

Breast Lift

This surgical procedure is used to address drooping of the breasts due to the loss of the skin elasticity or dramatic weight loss. It can help raise the breasts and restore natural firmness and perkiness. Because it is a reshaping procedure, it is also excellent for correction of asymmetries.

Breast Augmentation with Implants

This procedure involves placing silicone or saline breast implants inside the breasts to give them more volume and projection.

Combining the Benefits of Both Surgeries

Either due to aging or due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, the shape and size of the breasts change in women. For some, the breasts get larger, and for others, they shrink. They also droop due to the loose skin.

To bring back the firmness, a lift would help. But if there is also a loss of volume, pulling the skin tight will not be enough. An implant comes into the picture here. Besides giving the breasts a natural lift, the surgeon also places implants to make them look rounder and firmer in shape.

The Procedure

It might sound as if the augmentation mastopexy procedure involves a lot of corrections, but it is not a complicated surgery. In fact, in comparison with performing the two different surgeries, performing the combination procedure is a simpler and a more effective choice.

To begin the procedure, anesthesia is administered. An incision is then made for insertion of the breast implants. The location of this incision will depend on multiple factors and will be discussed during the consultation. Typically, it is made around the areola or in the breast fold.

The implants are then inserted through the incisions and positioned in the tissue pocket. The envelope of skin on the breasts is trimmed to reduce the degree of sagging. If the areolae need to be repositioned or resized, this is also performed. The incisions are closed carefully using medical sutures.

Quick Facts to Know About the Combined Procedure

• The total time required for the entire process, including the lift and the augmentation with implants, takes somewhere around 90 to 150 minutes. This estimate varies depending on the details of each case.

• The patient is usually given general anesthesia to reduce discomfort during their procedure.

• In most cases, the patient recovers within a matter of a week or two. Normal activities can then be resumed. However, any strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks. Associated symptoms like bruising, discomfort, and swelling will reduce steadily within a few days.
