Dermabrasion

Conveniently located to serve Chicago, Illinois

Dermabrasion in Chicago is a skin treatment that eliminates fine wrinkles and scars while also resurfacing the skin. The harsh edges of surface imperfections can be softened with dermabrasion, giving your skin a more youthful appearance. The treatment allows for the replacement of the treated skin with a new smoother layer of skin.

Why Undergo Dermabrasion Treatment?

Dermabrasion is a treatment for those who wish their skin was smoother. Dermabrasion can reveal softer and younger skin if you have scars from acne, surgery, or accidents; melasma; or precancerous rough spots.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermabrasion Treatment?

If you have fine lines and wrinkles on your face, dermabrasion may be right for you. Patients who have precancerous skin lesions or have scars from acne, a previous surgery, or an accident are the best candidates. Candidates should be in good general health and must have realistic expectations for the treatment’s outcome.

If you are in poor health or have a skin, blood-flow, or immunological issue, you will not be eligible for a dermabrasion treatment. Patients with active acne, sunburn, or who have recently received radiation are not candidates for the surgery. Those who are prone to aberrant scarring are also ruled out as prospects.

The Consultation

Before the dermabrasion process, you will meet with Dr. Gikas to discuss your goals and expectations. Dr. Gikas will explain the type of anesthesia, the operation, and the outcomes you can realistically expect during the consultation.

Any existing medical conditions, drug allergies, past medical treatments, past surgeries, current prescriptions, current vitamins, current supplements, and cigarette, drug, and alcohol usage will all be discussed during the consultation.

The Treatment Session

The dermabrasion treatment begins with an antiseptic cleansing chemical being used to properly clean the region to be “sanded.” A numbing medicine (local anesthesia) will be applied to the skin that will be treated.

Dr. Gikas will next use the dermabrasion tool to remove layers of skin until he reaches the appropriate layer, which will make the scar or wrinkle less obvious while also preventing further scarring. The process can take 1 to 2 hours to complete for larger regions.

What to Expect After Dermabrasion Treatment

Your new skin will be sensitive and red after dermabrasion. Swelling usually goes away within a few days to a week, although it might continue for weeks or months. Your skin tone may take up to three months to restore to normal.

Your skin will most likely take at least two weeks to recover. It could take several weeks before you get the full final results.

Aftercare

After dermabrasion, it is important to take good care of the treated region as the skin heals. Several times a day, you will need to clean your skin. This aids in the prevention of infection. It also removes any crusting that has formed.

Patients are advised to limit sun exposure and to wear sunscreen every day until the peeling has ceased. Sun damage is more prone to occur on new skin.

The Cost of Dermabrasion

The final price of dermabrasion therapy is determined by factors such as anesthetic fee, doctor’s fee, facility cost, and areas being treated. Insurance companies do not cover dermabrasion treatments, because they are considered cosmetic procedures.
