Why Undergo Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing removes blotches, scars, wrinkles, and lines on the face that are caused by aging, acne, or too much sun exposure. Laser skin resurfacing eliminates skin problems layer by layer, with pinpoint accuracy. New skin cells grow during the healing process, giving the skin a tighter, younger appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Skin that is elastic, non-oily, and not prone to scarring from tiny incisions is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. While this process can help with wrinkles and fine lines, it will not help with deep wrinkles or skin that is significantly drooping, and an alternative therapy should be pursued.

Furthermore, men and women who are taking certain medications or who have skin concerns such as active acne should avoid laser skin resurfacing.

The Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

Dr. Elias Gikas will perform the laser skin resurfacing therapy. You won’t have to remain overnight because it’s an outpatient treatment. Dr. Gikas can address specific wrinkles around your mouth, eyes, or forehead, as well as your entire face. With a local anesthetic, he will numb the areas to be treated.

It can take up to two hours for a full-face laser skin resurfacing treatment and it takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to treat certain portions of the face. Dr. Gikas will bandage the treated areas after the laser skin resurfacing operation. You will be advised to clean the treated regions four to five times a day and apply petroleum jelly to avoid scab formation.

What Happens After Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure?

A minor sunburn sensation may be felt after the laser skin resurfacing therapy. There will be some edema and redness. For a few days after the procedure, you may suffer itching or stinging.

After laser skin resurfacing, it’s likely that your skin will remain red or pink for several months. You should limit your exposure to the sun and apply sunscreen every day. Some patients who get laser skin resurfacing may notice a difference in their skin right away. For up to a year, this will continue to improve.
